Ben Aipa（ベン・アイパ）
スワローテールの生みの親であり、スティンガーやモダン・ロングボードを考案したシェイパーとして知られる、サーフィンに大きな影響を与えたレジェンドの一人。 1941年生まれ。高校を卒業後、セミプロのフットボールチームに入り、ラインバッカー、フルバック、センターとして活躍したが、仕事中の怪我により選手生命を絶たれた。その後、何をしようかと考えていたベンは、ある日、従兄弟とお金を出し合って１本のサーフボードをレンタルした。泳ぎとボディサーフィンには自信があったものの、パドルアウトしたのがその時が初めてで、ベンは23才だった。「最初の波をつかまえて、立って、最後まで乗ったんだ。That was it.」それから１年、ベンは毎日サーフィンし、29才の時に初めて出たコンテストで優勝し、戦歴を重ねた。 ベンがシェイピングを始めたのはサーフィンが大きく変化しつつある1968年。「僕はそこにいたんだ。僕の目の前でサーフィンのすべてが進化して変わっていった。みんな、それまでのタンカーから9フィート以下のショートボードに乗り換えていった。。」「1966年はナット・ヤングが9フィートのボードで世界アマチュアコンテストを優勝したけど、1968年にはハワイアン、カリフォルニア人、オーストラリア人がみんな、ショートボードを手にプエルトリコに集まって世界選手権が開かれていた。」 スワローテールがブレークしたきっかけは、1972年のオーシャンサイド・コンペティションで、ベンのスワローテールの板に乗った二人の若者- マイケル・ホーとラリー・バートルメン – が決勝まで残ったこと。スワローテールはアグレッシブなライディングに向くパフォーマンスボードの新しいデザインとして、瞬く間に広がっていった。 ザ・ファクトリーではベン・アイパの、軽量で耐久性に優れたエポキシ・サンドイッチ・ボードをカスタムオーダーいただけます。
