I want to learn how to surf. Where do I start?
Waikiki is the perfect place to learn. The waves are gentle, the bottom is mostly sand, and the crowd is friendly.
The easiest way to learn to surf is to start on the biggest board possible. We recommend getting a lesson for the first day. Here in Waikiki, the beach boys will give you a one-hour lesson on an 11′ board. Waikiki is the perfect place to learn. This is all you will need to get started. They will go over the basics of getting to your feet and board control.
After a little time on the 11′ board most people will rent a 10′. Once you feel confident on the 10′ you are ready to make your first purchase. Usually, the first board most surfers buy is a 9’0. Even if you intend to drop down to a smaller board the 9’0 is worth the money. You will always want a long board in your quiver for the really small days.
If the 9’0 begins to feel too long you are ready to step down to a 7’6 range. After some time on the 7’6 most surfers make a decision to continue to drop or stay on the longer boards. If you drop down too fast in size, you will have trouble catching waves. This could leave you discouraged and returning to the longer board.
Just make small steps down in size until you find the size that is fun for you.
